By D. Grieco Jr.
Why switch from Keurig to Tassimo? Espresso, Cappuccino, Latte, and Cafe Ole. Tassimo does them, and for the most part Keurig does not. Keurig has in fact come out with a new machine called the Rivo but there were two things stopping me from purchasing that one: 1) Milk tank on the side of the Rivo instead of milk pods... I can't be bothered with keeping milk in the fridge and cleaning the tank, 2) Price... Rivo is a lot more expensive.First, some thoughts on the Espresso and Cappuccino that comes out of the Tassimo after all, it's why I switched in the first place. I do like the Cappuccino and Espresso that this machine makes... it's good. Is it on par with what I've had at a really good coffee shop or at a cafe in Italy?... not really. Let's face it Espresso and Cappuccino coming out of a $5000 machine, made from freshly ground coffee, with fresh milk, lovingly crafted by a trained Barista is going to be WAY better than anything coming out of the Tassimo. Expectations adjusted, I think this is a very good machine for the $$$ and I like the fact that a decent cup of Cappuccino is now a quick and convenient option for me (and for guests at my home).Next, coffee. Does the Tassimo make a good cup of coffee? Well, yes and no. Yes the coffee I made (King of Joe Dark Roast) was good, but I like Green Mountain Coffee Dark Magic for the Keurig better. So it's not the machine, it's the coffee. All things being equal, I'd say the Tassimo / Keurig coffee making capabilities are identical. As a matter of fact, they even operate in a very similar manner... water goes in a holding tank, you turn the machine on, you put your cup under dispenser, load a pod, push a button, out comes coffee. There are subtle differences though and here are the ones that are really important to me...Power on / energy use... Keurig immediately begins to heat up water and is ready a minute or so later, then it anticipates that you might want a second cup and heats up another cache of water. Tassimo is ready right away and starts heating the water when you push the button. Coffee comes out of the Tassimo machine faster, and rarely do I want a second cup right away. POINT - Tassimo.Cup size... My old Keurig has three cup sizes 6oz., 9oz., and 12oz. Tassimo reads a barcode and dispenses a predetermined amount of water based on the info in the barcode. You can however, press a '+' or '-' button before or during the brew process to adjust the amount of water used. POINT - Tie.Beverage variety... Keurig does coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Tassimo does coffee, tea, hot chocolate, espresso, cappuccino, latte, and cafe ole. POINT - Tassimo.Beverage brands, availability, brand quality... The quality of the coffee is about equal between Keurig and Tassimo. The major difference here is that Keurig has way more variety and choice when it comes to the sheer number of brands and varieties of drinks, plus my favorite coffee is a Keurig-only brand/variety. POINT - Keurig.Beverage quality... Both Keurig and Tassimo make a quality drink. POINT - Tie.Build quality / warranty... Both excellent quality machine, both standard warranties. POINT - Tie.Pod price... Apples to apples (coffee pods only, not coffee/milk pods), without any discounts, the least expensive Keurig pods cost between 61 cents (8 o'clock coffee - 94 cents (Starbucks) each. Tassimo pods cost between 50 cents (Maxwell House) - 79 cents (Gevalia Dark Breakfast Blend). POINT - TassimoThere are some other differences that I thought were less important... Tassimo has a smaller water tank (-), Tassimo's water tank accommodates a water filter - I use filtered water so this is sort of a moot point (+), Tassimo is quieter (+), a second cup of coffee takes longer with the Tassimo (-), Tassimo take up less space on the counter (+), Tassimo's cup holder is adjustable - you can remove it entirely or it moves up and down (+).Why I picked the T55 over the other Tassimo models... Simple: the (+) or (-) water adjustment capabilities. The other models allow you ADD water to the brew. This is something, based on my preference for strong coffee, I would probably NOT do. I would however choose to run LESS water through the machine and make the brew stronger. Here's my recommendation:1) If getting Espresso, Cappuccino, Latte, and Cafe Ole in addition to Coffee, Tea, and Hot Chocolate out of your machine is important (this is me by the way), then the clear choice is Tassimo.2) If however you only want Coffee, Tea, or Hot Chocolate and huge variety is not really important to you then I still say go with the Tassimo; if anything, you'll save money on the pods.3) Lastly, if you're blown away by the variety and choices of coffees and teas, then go with the Keurig (I THOUGHT this was me, turns out I was wrong... after I tried a bunch of regular and flavored coffees for about two months, I ended up sticking with one brand/variety afterall).GETTING 13 DIFFERENT DRINKS FROM FOUR TASSIMO VARIETIES...Here's what I bought: Caramel Latte Macchiato, Cappuccino, Regular Coffee, Decaf Espresso. Here's what you can make with that by mixing/matching coffee and milk pods:Caramel Latte Macchiato (as packaged)Caramel Espresso (caramel espresso pod only)Regular Latte (latte milk pod + espresso pod from cappuccino)Decaf Latte (latte milk pod + decaf espresso pod)Cappuccino(as packaged)Regular Espresso (espresso pod only)Caramel Cappuccino (cappuccino milk pod + caramel espresso pod)Decaf Cappuccino (cappuccino milk pod + decaf espresso pod)Regular Coffee (as packaged)Cafe Ole (cappuccino or latte milk pod + regular coffee pod)Decaf Espresso (as packaged)Double shot half-caff espresso (one regular espresso pod, one decaf espresso pod)Double shot half-caff caramel espresso (one caramel espresso pod, one decaf espresso pod)EDITED 11/19/2013...1) I found two dark coffee pods that I enjoy as much as the Keurig Dark Magic... King of Joe Dark Roast, and Maxwell House French Roast. Both are excellent and the Maxwell House is the least expensive of ALL the pods (SCORE!)2) I have the the PERFECT recipe for Cappuccinos and Lattes for the T55... Milk Pod press the (-) key on the unit; Espresso Pod press the (+) key on the unit. This combo yields creamier milk and gives more coffee flavor to the drink.3) No regrets on switching whatsoever... I LOVE this machine.

I am not much of a coffee drinker, I bought this for my wife. I was initially dead set on a Keurig, after some research it appeared even though Tassimo has a MUCH smaller selection of products, it was a better machine. (By the way I do not believe more is always better anyhow) Fast forward 5 months later we both love the machine. I use it for my Earl Grey tea and she of course for coffee. I have used Keurig machines at work and I agree the coffee is many times weak. What I like about Tassimo is before you buy you know the strength of the coffee, so buy what suits you: Mild / Medium / Bold / Extra Bold. You get what you buy.Even though the T-disks tend to be expensive if you are indeed a daily / regular Starbucks visitor, there is absolutely no doubt you will save by getting a Tassimo. Imagine spending $3-$5 on one drink versus $9 for 12 for 16 drinks! I of course will still stop by a Starbucks every now and then, I still like the place. The T55 is relatively new in the US, but it is a great unit. So don't pass on it because there are just a few reviews. I very much like the simple one touch operation. A tiny down side is the need to hold down the "+" button for additional beverage. But in reality, that is just a few seconds of your time.Another great aspect on the T55 is the adjustable and removable base, so you can adjust the height if you are brewing into a tea cup, a regular mug of remove it completely for a travel mug. When I did my research I read some people complain about the noise. Noise? What noise? Yes it is not a silent machine, but "loud" unbearable noise? Come on!Of course a major advantage of Tassimo is its ability to also brew espressos, cappuccinos and lattes. As well as ice teas but I am yet to try that out.Of course there are Cons:First, cost, when I had three coffee drinkers in the house, they were going through the packs like crazy. My advise, if you drink that much coffee, join the clubs available both here or at Tassimo and get the best prices.Second: Heat. I wish the system allowed you to choose how hot you wanted your beverage, I like mine very hot and the few times I use milk in my tea, I need to re-heat the cup. This is not that big a deal.Third the water tank. If it was larger, it would be great. AND also more sturdy. Ours chipped and started to leak due to some bad handling at home, but the good thing is we got a free replacement from Tassimo. In a nutshell, It is a great affordable way to get great coffee and other drinks. My giving it 4 stars is simply because it is not perfect, but then how much of what we have in life is perfect?

I owned a B70 and two b60 keurig units and had to deal with weak coffee all the time I hated them all.I bought this unit at BBB w the 20% off and I must tell you this machine blows away keurig!! Hands down. A full bodied cup of Joe out of a single serve machine. My first t disc was the Gevalia dark house blend and it is great! I couldn't compare this unit to the newest Keurig Vue700 but that doesn't matter now. I gave up on Keurig! I just bought this unit so I can't tell u how it will hold up. I make about 3 cups a day. I also tried the cappuccino and it is also very good coming out of this little machine which I must say is a lot smaller than the B70. It is very easy to use (1 button)It comes with a water filter (a good thing!, keurig charges for this as an accessory) it has a digital reminder so after a few months you know when to change it.I will update later after I use this unit for a few months11-8-2013 UPDATE.I am now getting rid of this unit too. I just cant keep spending around .75 cents for a cup of coffee at home especially when it is just ok. it is however a lot better than the keurigs that I owned explained above.I now have a AeroPress. I use my own coffee and it comes out awesome. this brewer is under 30 dollars too!! there is the issue of some cleanup not much just a quick rinse. so for now I am done with the pod brewers completely. AeroPress is better on environment too. just a piece of paper, the filter, which you can replace with a stainless one anyhow.
